Despite 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion being marketed as the franchise’s finale, Universal’s decision to greenlight another instalment hardly surprises. The studio’s hunger for franchises remains evident.

Excitement mounted when news broke earlier this week that Deadpool 2 director David Leitch was in discussions to lead the untitled project. Fans speculated about the potential high-octane, stunt-filled direction Leitch, known for his work on Bullet Train, might take the beloved dino-series.

However, recent reports from industry trades confirm Leitch’s departure from the movie, leaving fans eager for updates on the project’s new direction.

THR states the following:

“Part of the problem is that Universal is so far along on the project that Leitch would essentially have been more of a shooter than someone who could have really put his stamp on the film.”

An inside source adds that “There’s not enough time to work with new ideas,” news which perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise when Universal has already slotted in this new Jurassic World movie for an ambitious July 2, 2025 release date.

Producers Quickly Gear Up for Production of New Jurassic World Movie; Director Search Underway

With production ramping up swiftly, producers have wasted no time in commissioning dinosaur designs and initiating pre-production efforts for the upcoming movie. As the studio races against the clock, reports indicate they are actively seeking a director-for-hire to helm the project.

Interestingly, the trade adds that part of the appeal for Leitch was the fact this movie “was going to lean into action territory (one source described it as having an Escape from New York vibe, but a Universal insider said that was not true. Well, what about the idea of weaponized dinosaurs? The insider said no.)”

colin trevorrow

In 2022, Colin Trevorrow, the director behind Jurassic World and its sequel Jurassic World Dominion, provided intriguing hints about the future direction of the franchise. With dinosaurs now freely roaming the Earth and Isla Nublar left in ruins, Trevorrow offered insights into the potential paths the series could explore next.

“The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. [Dominion] is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs,” the filmmaker explained. “For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park.”

“But if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”

The franchise seems to have evolved beyond the notion of dinosaurs contained within a theme park. While steering clear of a post-apocalyptic setting, there’s exciting potential to explore diverse narratives worldwide. Previous discussions hinted at the possibility of delving into the horror genre within this expansive universe.
