Today, Predator fans received exciting news as Dan Trachtenberg is officially set to direct Badlands, a new standalone story within the franchise. However, this announcement raises questions about the fate of the Prey sequel.
Released exclusively on Hulu, the Predator prequel Prey was a major success, garnering critical acclaim and awards attention.
Director Dan Trachtenberg’s return to the franchise for Badlands has been confirmed, with shooting expected to commence later this year. Described as a priority for 20th Century Studios, a Disney-owned company, the film is already in the casting stages for its lead role.
Plot details for Badlands remain under wraps, including information about the leads and the film’s setting. It’s likely to be a theatrical release this time around.
However, what adds an extra layer of intrigue is the following information according to the trade.
“Sources say while it is still in early development, a Prey 2 is still in the works that would return to the films original setting and with the films star, Amber Midthunder, potentially returning.”
“Sources stress no talent is attached to that film but the interesting element is that even though there have been seven films featuring the infamous alien, there has never been an instance where the star of a previous film has returned to reprise their role.”

Prey continues the epic Predator legacy in this action-thriller set in 1719 on the Great Plains with a band of Comanches. Naru, a fierce and highly skilled young warrior, embarks on a mission to protect her people, only to discover that the prey she stalks is a highly evolved alien predator, leading to a vicious and terrifying showdown.
In a conversation with Trachtenberg during the release of Prey, he hinted at various directions he’d like to explore within the Predator franchise. Interestingly, he implied that these directions might not necessarily follow the traditional sequel format.
“I think there’s definitely something…because so many movies are seen as franchise starters, there’s something inherently refreshing about a movie that feels complete. I hope this movie does feel complete,” the filmmaker says in the video below. “That said, we do something very unique in that, whereas other movies may have a post-credits scene, we have some storytelling inside our end credits themselves.”
“It leaves room for lots of different kinds of sequels to be made. I don’t know if we’re ready yet to say exactly what we want to do next, but I think there are lots of cool opportunities.”
