Gina Carano, ousted from her role as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian three years ago, is now taking legal action against Disney and Lucasfilm.
According to THR, Carano is suing both companies for discrimination and wrongful termination following her 2021 dismissal over a series of controversial right-wing social media posts. The lawsuit was officially filed in California federal court on Tuesday. Interestingly, Elon Musk is backing Carano’s legal battle, pledging to fund the lawsuit for the former Mandalorian star.

This support aligns with Musk’s earlier commitment to cover legal expenses for users who allege discrimination based on their social media activity. Joe Benarroch, head of X’s business operations, confirmed Musk’s involvement in a statement.
The statement from X Corp highlights their dedication to supporting free speech by offering financial backing to Gina Carano’s lawsuit. “This support aims to empower her in seeking justice for her right to free expression on X and in her pursuit to work without facing bullying, harassment, or discrimination”. Carano responded with gratitude, stating, “I am honoured that my case has been chosen to be supported by the company that has been one of the last glimmers of hope for free speech in the world.”
In the lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, Carano alleges harassment and defamation, citing her refusal to conform to their perspectives on various issues including Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns, and claims of election interference. She also argues disparity in treatment, pointing out that her male co-stars from The Mandalorian faced no repercussions for sharing offensive social media posts. One such instance is Pedro Pascal’s 2017 post comparing former U.S. president Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. Furthermore, Carano claims she was pressured to meet with a representative from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination and issue a public apology, which she declined, ultimately resulting in her termination.
“Defendants went so far as to try and convince Carano’s publicist to force Carano to issue a statement admitting to mocking or insulting an entire group of people, which Carano had never done,” as noted in the complaint, which adds that Carano also declined to meet with Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy and 45 employees identifying as LGBTQ+ before the termination.
Gina Carano Pushes for Disney to Recast Her as Cara Dune
Furthermore, Gina Carano claims that Disney’s ‘post-termination smear campaign’ resulted in her talent agency and transactional lawyer severing ties with her. Consequently, Carano is seeking a minimum of $75,000 in addition to punitive damages, citing wrongful termination and gender discrimination. The lawsuit also calls for Lucasfilm to reconsider her for the role of Cara Dune, underscoring Carano’s desire to rejoin the Star Wars franchise.
In a recent statement, Carano expressed her belief that her termination was unjust, stating, “Some of us have been unfairly targeted, harassed, and deprived of our livelihoods simply for engaging in dialogue, asking questions, and refusing to conform to mob mentality”.
