Matthew Vaughn, the director behind the upcoming Kick-Ass reboot, has shared a significant update, unveiling plans for a trilogy that is currently underway. Having previously directed the 2010 film adaptation of the comic franchise, Vaughn announced in 2023 that a reboot was in the works, with filming set to commence in 2024.
In an interview with Collider, Vaughn disclosed that the Kick-Ass reboot will comprise a trilogy, with the initial instalment already in the can. While the scripting for the third film, titled Kick-Ass, is halfway complete, two other movies, namely School Fight and Vram, will precede it. Here’s a glimpse of Vaughn’s insights:
We’re halfway through [the script]. There’s a very, very dare I say it… and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe. It is what, you know, ‘Kick Ass’ was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing ‘Kick Ass,’ which couldn’t be more ‘Kick Ass.’
The trilogy will be School Fight, this movie, let’s call it Vram for the time being, and then Kick-Ass, and they’re all connected.
So, when this (VRAM) is finished, I think this will launch, I’ll be conservative on this, if we’re lucky, Toronto, if we’re not lucky, Sundance. Well, this year, next year, if you know what I mean.

Vaughn provided further details, noting that School Fight has already completed filming, and Vram is currently in production. Surprisingly, there are no set plans to conclude the trilogy before the release of the first movie. The sequence of titles suggests a strategic build-up, with School Fight and Vram setting the stage for Kick-Ass, which is slated to serve as the narrative bookend. Notably, as it’s a reboot, original film stars such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz will not be reprising their roles.
This unconventional approach to the subversive superhero comedy marks a departure, as the trilogy doesn’t kick off with a movie bearing the franchise’s name. However, given the recent success of dark comedies featuring superpowers, like The Boys, it’s anticipated that the series will garner widespread acclaim. While the cast of the new Kick-Ass will differ, Vaughn’s continued involvement suggests a commitment to maintaining the original duology’s tone.
While details about the movies remain scarce, the distinctive titles of each film suggest a creative departure for the series. The potential for an expanded narrative beyond Kick-Ass is evident, leaving audiences intrigued about the director’s vision for the initial two instalments. As the reboot trilogy is well underway in production, anticipation builds for forthcoming revelations about what lies ahead.
