Marvel’s Thunderbolts Faces Casting Challenges as Dev Patel and Austin Abrams Decline The Sentry Roles
In a surprising turn of events, it seems that Marvel’s Thunderbolts is encountering difficulties in casting The Sentry, adding to the ongoing struggles faced by the film. The situation mirrors the setbacks seen with the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, as both projects have undergone changes with new writers coming on board.
Following Steven Yeun’s departure, the role of The Sentry has reportedly been offered to two additional actors, namely Dev Patel and Austin Abrams, with Abrams being the most recent contender. Unfortunately, the latest update reveals that not only did Dev Patel reject the role after Steven Yeun’s exit, but Austin Abrams has also turned down the opportunity to portray The Sentry in Thunderbolts.
Daniel RPK, a reputable source known for movie scoops, originally reported that Austin Abrams was the latest actor offered the role. However, the recent update from the scooper indicates that Abrams has declined the chance to play Sentry.
What could be the reason for everyone passing on this character? Bad character arc? Bad Script? Bad overall movie?
It’s worth noting that Steven Yeun was the only confirmed cast member, and the current casting rumours appear to originate from casting sheets. These sheets might simply feature names suggested for roles and may not carry substantial weight in terms of finalized casting decisions.
As for the reasons behind Yeun’s departure, there are claims that scheduling conflicts due to strikes disrupted his availability. However, this assertion seems questionable, given that a look at his IMDb profile indicates a relatively open schedule.
Allegedly, several actors turned down roles in Fantastic Four, specifically for Sue Storm and Reed Richards. Among them, it is rumoured that Adam Driver declined due to concerns about the quality of the Fantastic Four script, which was purportedly deemed subpar.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts is slated for release on July 25, 2025
